Welcome

  • Writing a letter to the editor of a newspaper is a time-honored way to share an opinion with decision-makers and others who read newspapers both in print and online.
  • The Star-Telegram requires a name and city of residence for letter writers. It seems only fair that we ask the same of those who wish to comment on those letters. We know that flies in the face of custom in cyberspace, but fair is fair. If the letter writers have to be identified, then so do the people who respond.
  • Posts that do not meet these requirements will be discarded. Have at it ... and play nice!

System failure

It is glaringly apparent that the current healthcare system no longer serves the majority of Americans, and it must be changed. (See: “Healthcare: Radical change?” Jan. 3)

Would conservatives who “fear that government employees (or, as they prefer, bureaucrats) will be making life and death decisions for loved ones” be more trusting of an insurance company CEO, who is motivated by bonuses, profits and huge stock options, making the same decisions?

Even more compelling, by some estimates the insurance industry typically takes 27 to 35 cents from every healthcare dollar for administrative expenses, profits and so on.

Compare this with the 6- to 7-cent cost to taxpayers to manage the Medicare system. Surprised?
