System failure
It is glaringly apparent that the current healthcare system no longer serves the majority of Americans, and it must be changed. (See: “Healthcare: Radical change?” Jan. 3)
Would conservatives who “fear that government employees (or, as they prefer, bureaucrats) will be making life and death decisions for loved ones” be more trusting of an insurance company CEO, who is motivated by bonuses, profits and huge stock options, making the same decisions?
Even more compelling, by some estimates the insurance industry typically takes 27 to 35 cents from every healthcare dollar for administrative expenses, profits and so on.
Compare this with the 6- to 7-cent cost to taxpayers to manage the Medicare system. Surprised?
